Live online chat – Monday 23 July

Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Police Authority are hosting a public online chat on Monday 23 July.

Temporary Chief Constable Pat Geenty, Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Mike Veale and Police Authority Chairman Chris Hoare will be logged on from 7pm to 8pm to answer your questions.

This will be the fifth public online chat Wiltshire Police Chief Officers and Wiltshire Police Authority have held.

Temporary Chief Constable Pat Geenty said: “It is important to us as a Force to provide Wiltshire residents with a chance to engage with their local police service and this is one way of doing so.

“At the last chat, topics raised included anti-social behaviour, traffic highways agency officers, Police Community Support Officers driving patrol cars, Royal Military Police assisting Wiltshire Police as well as recruitment and career opportunities within the police service.”

Wiltshire Police Authority Chairman Chris Hoare added: “Other questions raised during the previous online chat were about the forthcoming Police and Crime Commissioner and what this means for Wiltshire Police.

“With this new figure being elected in November, I would welcome further questions ahead of the transition.”

Chief Officers and the Police Authority Chairman will endeavour to answer as many questions as possible during the session on Monday 23 July from 7pm – 8pm.

However, it may not be possible to answer all questions within the live hour. So Wiltshire Police will endeavour to post answers to questions not answered during the live hour on the Wiltshire Police website by the end of the following day (Tuesday 24 July).

The online session must not be used to report a crime or query the progress with an existing crime. All questions will be monitored and will only be posted once they have been approved.

Devizes Firearms Incident update

Wiltshire Police were called to a firearms incident in Devizes shortly before 3:00 pm on Monday 2nd July 2012.

A man entered an office at Morris, Goddard and Ward on St John’s Street armed with a gun and fired a single shot injuring a man. Specialist Armed Response Officers quickly arrested a suspect in Rowde. No one else was injured in the incident and a weapon we believe to have been used in the incident has been recovered.

A 62 year old man from the local area was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody at Melksham Police Station.

The victim aged 58 from Westbury sustained life threatening head injuries and was airlifted to Frenchay Hospital. His family are with him at the hospital and he remains in a very serious condition.

DCI Ian Saunders is leading the investigation and said: ‘My team have continued working overnight and today officers will be carrying out further checks of CCTV, house to house enquiries and forensic examination of the scene.

I would like to appeal for anyone who was in the area of St John’s Street, Devizes around 3:00 pm yesterday afternoon to make contact with Police as they may have important information to assist the investigation.’

Local Inspector Ron Peach said: ‘I would like to stress how very rare incidents such as this are in Devizes, and across the county however we recognise that the community will be concerned and will experience some disruption as officers conduct enquiries. The road closures have been now been lifted and we would like to thank residents for their understanding and co operation. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim at this difficult time.’

Anyone with any information regarding this incident is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101.
