Summer Solstice 2012

This week Wiltshire police are wishing everyone attending Solstice in Avebury and Stonehenge a safe and enjoyable event.

Police work very closely with partners at English Heritage to make sure that the appropriate security measures are in place for the celebrations.

The aim, as always, is to ensure that all those attending Summer Solstice can enjoy the event in a safe environment.

Public safety remains a priority and police will deal firmly with any such incidents in a proportionate manner. Wiltshire police and the public have high expectations as to what is acceptable behaviour at Solstice and will be policing the event as they would a night time economy. It is unacceptable for anyone attending this event to have to suffer violence, disorder, drink and drug related offences or general anti social behaviour.

As with previous years, there will be Amnesty bins available outside of the event and drugs dogs will be at both Stonehenge and Avebury this year.

English Heritage have Conditions of Entry (follow link below) which states that only moderate personal consumption of alcohol is permitted and that drunk people will not be allowed entry. Police advise those attending to not bring any more than moderate amounts of alcohol with them.

Superintendent Matt Pullen, who is leading the policing plan said:

“This year is one of the busiest calendars Wiltshire has ever seen including Solstice. A huge amount of planning and organising has taken place to ensuring that our regular events, such as Solstice, gets the right policing plan, enabling all who come to the event or who are impacted by it to feel safe. We all wish you all a safe and enjoyable Solstice.”

During the festivities normal policing services throughout Wiltshire will be maintained.

Summer Solstice is celebrated at Stonehenge on 20th into 21st June and Avebury from 19th – 22nd June 2012.
