The following is a statement from the family of Charles Roger Millar (known as Roger):

“The Millar family takes no gratification from the verdict that has come today as no verdict would ever be able to bring Roger back.

“However we do take satisfaction in the fact that the Justice system in our country works and works well as shown by the result today.

“The passing of our brother Roger has left a large whole in the lives of everyone he came in contact with.

“Roger was the complete gentleman and has been described so, not only by the Millar family but colleagues that he worked with whilst serving his country With the Corps of the Royal Engineers both home and abroad.

“We would like to thank Mr Lickley QC and the Crown Prosecution Service along with Detective Inspector Matthew Davey and the Major Crime Investigation Team from Wiltshire Police for all the hard work and dedication that they have shown throughout the whole of this case.

“We would also like to thank Audrey Carson and the staff from the Victim Homicide Service for their great work and support that they have shown to our family and close friends during this difficult period.”

Wiltshire Police is urging all homeowners to make sure they secure their property after a spike in the number of insecurity burglaries in Swindon.

Since the beginning of May, there have been 16 reported burglaries which have occurred as a direct result from a door or window being left unlocked.

In addition to the insecurity burglaries, there have also been 46 reported thefts from motor vehicles within Swindon since the start of May –many of which are as a direct result of the vehicle being left unlocked.

Acting Detective Sergeant Gemma Vinton of the Swindon Priority Crime Team said: “We live in one of the safest counties in the country, with a low burglary rate. However, opportunists can strike anywhere and it is important that people heed advice to prevent themselves becoming victims of crime.

“There are very simple steps that people can take to protect their property, the most basic of these is to make sure you lock your doors and windows.

“Leaving your house or car door unlocked could be seen as an open invitation to thieves as the effort to steal on their part is minimal.

“I would appeal to people to make sure they are locking up their property when they are out or asleep, especially with the summer months approaching as many people might forget to close windows or doors.

“I would also ask that any neighbours who see anything suspicious going on in their local area to contact Wiltshire Police immediately.”

Residents can prevent themselves becoming victims of such crime by:

• Locking front and back doors when going out and not leaving accessible windows open in unoccupied rooms, no matter what the temperature is or how long you intend to be out.

• Being a nosey neighbour. Tell the police if you see anyone acting suspiciously in or around premises in your neighbourhood, and if possible, take the registration numbers of any unusual vehicles.

• Always taking your keys out of your lock as thieves can reach in and open the door.

• Putting valuables, including phone chargers (which imply a mobile phone is around), out of sight. It has been known for burglars to use hooks to pick up items through letterboxes, windows and cat flaps.

• Not leaving anything in reach of a cat flap.

For more information on how to improve your home security please contact the local Crime Reduction Officers or your Neighbourhood Policing Team on 101.

Anyone with information on any of the incidents should contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Police are asking mourners to park safely and not walk on the A419 for their own safety, following flowers being left at the site of a double fatal road traffic collision on the A419 which occurred on Saturday 18th May 2013.

Acting Police Inspector Donna West from Wiltshire Police said:

“This is a tragic incident and we appreciate that mourners want to leave flowers at the site. However, we are asking people to park on Watermead, Stratton and then walk over to the bottom of the grass verge where the two young victims died.

Our investigation continues but we must be aware of the safety of all those who wish to lay flowers and it is dangerous to walk along the A419 as there is no hard shoulder.”

The post mortem examinations of the two girls took place yesterday but we are awaiting further tests before the results are known.

There were two 20-year-old men taken to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol after the collision. One remains in a critical condition in the intensive care unit after extensive surgery. It is believed that he has life changing injuries.

The other man is critical but stable. He is also believed to have life changing injuries.

The 20-year-old man taken to the Great Western Hospital in Swindon remains in a stable condition.

Anyone who thinks they may have information surrounding this incident, should contact Wiltshire Police immediately on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.
